Tribute albums generally serve a dual purpose, in providing exposure to new bands and enhancing the status of the target of their adulation. For those being honoured, it will always be a win-win situation, as the implicit message is that the artist is significantly influential. The situation for the participants is less clear cut, as while they may reach a wider audience, it is through the covers of another work, and as participants are usually at the nascent stages of their musical careers, they usually do not have an established sound that can avoid being subsumed by the focus of the album. Thus, instead of exposing their own material to the world, which could conceivably contain the seeds of greatness, forgettable covers are provided.
I have never heard of any of the fourteen thrash and death bands culled from the Colombian underground, and after hearing all the tracks, I have no desire to either. This is a pity, as the odds are that at least one or two would be worthy of further attention, but I'm fucked if I know who they are.
For those who are unaware of Masacre (not to be confused with Massacre, another excellent band) they are a cult Colombian band and easily Colombia's most significant contribution to the metal universe. Their albums are recommended, especially _Reqviem_, but there is little to recommend this tribute album.
