Partisan warfare, folk chants and abysmal black noise -- aye! This here beast could only have crawled from the endless swamps, twilight thickets and vast plains of East Europa! This compilation might be dedicated to the guerilla resistance (namely "the wood brothers"), who fought communism between 1940 and 1960, but it might as well serve as "The Beginner's Guide to Eastern European Folk Metal / NSBM" for all those young chaps daring to take their first look beyond the Western scene.
Highlighting both the big guns of the genre (Nokturnal Mortum, Drudkh, Hate Forest, Skyforger), the lesser-known though rather worthy (Loits, Obtest, Astrofaes) and the absolutely subterranean (Tharaphita, Must Missa, Urskumug), _The Wood Brothers_ still manages to sound like a cohesive collection, with tracks that share pretty much the same basic atmosphere if not the same stylistic direction. It is highly recommended only to people that are new to the above mentioned styles though, for there is precious little exclusive unreleased material here for a fan of Eastern European folk metal / NSBM to enjoy. However, if you're an ardent supporter, a newbie or a completist, the selling points of this here anthology might as well be: a) the fine selection by Roman (Hate Forest); b) the Russian version of Nokturnal Mortum's "Hailed Be the Heroes"; c) Hate Forest's "The Wood Brothers", taken from _Resistance_ 7"; and d) Obtest's pre-album version of "Devyniaragis". Best enjoyed in camouflage, rifle in hands.
