Although I do not consider myself an ignoramus of matters metal, until this compilation landed in my post-box I was unable to name any band originating from this country -- and I am certainly not alone. Their neighbour Russia has given rise to a number of bands who are starting to make an impact beyond the Iron Curtain, while their other neighbour Latvia has given rise to heathens Skyforger.
If nothing else, this compilation proves that there is indeed a thriving metal scene in Estonia, featuring no less than twenty bands, with a focus on death metal (based) bands, although black and pagan bands also make an appearance. As with the majority of compilations of this kind, the quality of the bands varies widely, although the production is sufficiently acceptable in most cases.
The most notable contribution is a track by Loits, which is an impassioned display of blackened melancholy. If any of these bands are likely to have an impact outside of Estonia, it will probably be this band. Another band worthy of special mention is Raud-Ants, who are a welcome addition to the folk/pagan metal scene. Although their contribution is somewhat messy, they are a band I will certainly be wanting to hear more form in future.
A worthwhile introduction to the comparatively unknown Estonian scene.
