In a list surprisingly devoid of any Drudkh for a change, Primordial obtained their second success in as many albums for Metal Blade. Contrary to the 2005 election of _The Gathering Wilderness_ however, this time _To the Nameless Dead_ had to fight off close competition from Wolves in the Throne Room, and to a slightly lesser extent, Moonsorrow.

While Americans Wolves in the Throne Room made their CoC awards debut, Finns Moonsorrow remarkably repeated their 2005 podium finish, when _Verisäkeet_ also conquered third place.

In a black metal dominated list, Marduk shunned past criticism with their strong _Rom 5:12_ edging out Neurosis' _Given to the Rising_ -- in fifth place, the first album without any connection to black metal. Despite never really pushing the leaders, Neurosis were able to improve on 2004's sixth place with _The Eye of Every Storm_. As it turned out, it was Deathspell Omega who repeated their own previous sixth place, with _Fas - Ite, Maledicti, in Ignem Aeternum_ finishing in the same position as its 2005 predecessor _Kénôse_.

Immolation made it to seventh place with _Shadows in the Light_ -- the first death metal album to feature --, followed by Type O Negative's _Dead Again_, Electric Wizard's _Witchcult Today_ and High on Fire's _Death Is This Communion_. Akercocke and Clutch narrowly missed the top ten.
