Keep of Kalessin - Kolossus
Given that Keep of Kalessin's mainman, Arnt "Obsidian Claw", has practically forged a career out of thumbing his nose at many of black metal's stayed conventions, it really should surprise no one that _Kolossus_ has ended up sounding like it does.
Dead Man - Euphoria
As stoner-influenced bands reach further and further back towards the acid-inflected days of psych folk and space rock worship, more and more the influences germane to the metal genre are stripped to the bone, in no instance more clearly to these ears than (dope) fiendish acid blues mavens Dead Man and their sophomore effort _Euphoria_.
Zero Hour - Dark Deceiver
Spearheaded by Mastodon and helped on in no small part by names like Canvas Solaris and Zero Hour, the new wave of prog picks up where bands like Cynic left off and has evolved the craft into a consistently engaging slew of releases. Among these, _Dark Deceiver_ is surely a major highlight.
Crystalmoors - Antiqvum Exqvirite Matrem
Since _Nabia Orebia_ was recorded, Crystalmoors have changed their style from pagan metal blackened around the edges towards a more complex and engaging mix of death, black and Celtic folk, with a pinch of the melodic and the epic. The shift in style is subtle compared to the transformation in other departments, however.
Werkraum - Early Love Music
_Early Love Music_ is a future classic; ten years from now, this will be hailed as a neofolk staple.
Alpha Galates - A Stimulus for Reason
Alpha Galates are living proof that big labels will sign you if you can play more than the same three barre chords. It just doesn't happen too often, on a par with sightings of Haley's comet.
Nachtmystium - Assassins: Black Meddle Part 1
From the opening strains of Nachtmystium's fourth full-length, it becomes apparent that the band have learned to pace themselves creatively, only diving into leftfield territory when the occasion calls for it.
Opeth - Watershed
Despite enough diversity in the catalog to mandate that nearly every individual has their particular fave, you'd be hard pressed to find anyone who believes the band have ever made a clear misstep. "Until now", you probably expect me to say.
