Whorethorn - _Chaotic Desolation_
by: Daniel Cairns (1.5 out of 5)
Whorethorn are misanthropic. They want you to know that above all else. You can tell that by their music. It's raw, abrasive and shows complete disregard for the listener's entertainment. Now that's misanthropy. Whorethorn are also so misanthropic that they don't believe in sending your reviewer a comprehensive package. You see, while other squares send in well packaged demos with promo sheets, photos and backgrounds, Whorethorn sends a perfunctory link to a site where the reviewer has to look for their music. Ha! You see that? That's pure hatred for man right there. They're also so misanthropic that they generally can't be bothered with song titles. Two of their three songs are called "untitled". Well bugger me, that's quite a statement isn't it?

Whorethorn's laziness would be admirable if their music was up to scratch, but it really isn't. Everything about this demo screams cliché. Whorethorn, you see, are an old-school black metal band, and there aren't many of those around, are there? If you've heard any early Emperor or Immortal, you really aren't going to be surprised by anything you hear. Drums crash about at the same rate, the guitars sound fuzzy and over distorted, and the vocalist squeals like a pig in a war. The last metaphor is apt actually, because the only song with a title is called "The Adrenal Rush of Battle". Mmm, how very metal. The only problem is that it should have been called "The Ferocious Onset of Ennui". Le sigh.

It's not all awful. I quite like the production. In a world where every man and his kvlt dog is able to make studio quality music with nought but a laptop, it's quite refreshing to hear a band stick two fingers up at that and pursue a cheap, nasty mess of a sound. They're also adequate with their instruments, and the three barrages of noise just about hang together without prolapsing. But, as is the case with so many, they don't seem to be bothered with writing anything vaguely engaging.

Whorethorn then. You'll probably feel a bit of a prick listening to them.
