Insicknia - _Ascent to the Sky_
by: Quentin Kalis (4.5 out of 5)
I could call this metalcore with thrash tendencies, and technically I would be correct, but this description evokes bands with knuckles callused from dragging on the ground when they are not scraping the bottom of the barrel. By comparison Insicknia offer an approach that is more cerebral, complex and unique than implied by the groan-inducing pun of the band name. Their contemporary approach does incorporate metalcore vox, right down to the occasional clean vox -- which are passable -- but their technical, unpredictable and non-linear yet well-structured songs owe more to Meshuggah than to any metalcore band! The production is OK, excellent considering the relatively limited resources they must have had, but an improved production would bring out the nuances whilst simultaneously providing the heavier to the guitars. Watch out for these guys -- they are sure to get signed sooner rather than later.
