Esugenus - _Danse Maccabre_
by: Quentin Kalis (3 out of 5)
France arguably has the strongest metal scene at the moment, and perhaps their collective influence has allowed one man missive Esugenus to buck the trend of mediocre and unoriginal performance. Esugenus' strength does not lie in originality -- the instrumental opener is clearly inspired by Burzum's seminal "Det Som En Gang Var", replete with a similar droning, catchy rhythm and rumbling drums rounded off with a heavy dose of atmosphere. Nevertheless, it is a strong opening, and the closer, also an instrumental, is a similarly potent number. The more conventional numbers in-between are less interesting, less complex, and more tellingly shorter, and fail to have the same impact as the instrumental numbers. It may be that the conventional song structures are too limiting for Abside's blackened vision, but there is no reason why he can't take the best of both worlds to create a stronger necrotic vision.
