Death Aura - _Winds of Mortal Hope_
by: Quentin Kalis (4 out of 5)
This is intended as a concept project which will be sustained for three demos and a full-length. The demos will form a conceptual trilogy, of which this is the first. The names of the upcoming demos are _Vie Passe_ and _Noble Brevity_. The full-length is self-titled and will be released by Tour de Garde.

I'm not too sure whether the musical style will change in an Ulverian manner or whether the same style will dominate. If it's the same, it's not too bad; a mix of Xasthur-styled blackened despondency with a stronger funeral doom lineage. Cleanly struck arpeggios supplement the already heavy atmospherics, to the extent that guitars do not even feature in two of the four songs. The vocals are typical funeral doom growls, albeit not as low pitched, but still consisting of a continuous groan or snarl that renders it impossible for the listener to discern any lyrics. It's not complex, not even for black metal, and more than most is heavily reliant on the creation of a particular atmosphere -- but it is an impressive despondent atmosphere that elevates this above much of the dross in the black metal underground.
