Phantazo - _Demo I_
by: Alexandra Erickson (3 out of 5)
Phantazo, a one-man industrial black metal outfit from some dark corner of Italy, is terribly cryptic and noisy. This, as reasonably as I can tell, the only demo put out thus far, is as depressive and avant-garde industrial as black metal can stray without falling into experimental voids. Still very tinny and raw, traditional black metal undertones run thick through all five tracks, with croaky vocals that would make even the most low-fi Fenriz jealous. Cacophonous at points (even for black metal), this just runs deep in the vein of Gaahlskaag and Jotunspor. There's a new era of industrialized black metal being produced, and Phantazo fits the bill if this release speaks anything of his musical ability and planned route.
