The Grief - _The Realm of the Grief_
by: Quentin Kalis (4 out of 5)
Sometimes true gems are overlooked because of the name. This was the case with The Black, and I approached The Grief with a similar dose of trepidation. But such caution appears to have been unnecessary, as _The Realm of the Grief_ proved to be a rather capable demo from these Ecuadorians.

_TRotG_ is located at the unholy nexus of symphonic black and doom metal. The best element is the vocalist, who is a rare metal entity, in that he possesses a unique voice -- akin to, yet also more than, a post-Burzum screech. The band would be negatively affected by his departure.

There's still some work to be done in terms of refining their sound and creating extreme music with a stronger emotional impact, but I do believe that they have managed to find a niche for themselves.

Latin American metal tends to be dominated (nay, overshadowed) by their Portuguese speaking kin, but The Grief are proof that quality Latin American metal can be found outside of that big country in the east.
