Godphobia - _Promo 2006_
by: Quentin Kalis (3 out of 5)
Godphobia seems like an unusual name for a death metal band. Surely the expected crowd of anti-Christians would not deliberately choose a name that means "fear of God"? Disdain, contempt, anger, nonchalance, mockery -- these are all approaches I would expect from the death crowd, but not fear. Perhaps they mean it in the same sense that someone who is bigoted towards gays or Islam is referred to as a "homophobe" or "Islamophobe". They certainly haven't swapped spiked gauntlets for "WWJD" bands.

Leaving aside my good friend the tangent for a moment, _Promo 2006_ is at the very least a solid stab at death metal; however, whether it will receive wider attention is debatable. It doesn't feel as if they have gone much beyond the narrow confines of the genre; in fact, it feels as if they have artificially limited themselves. There's nothing wrong with having a go at old-school death metal, even if it isn't particularly innovative, and they do have their moments. It's just that, well, it's all been done before.
