Amok - _Hephaistos_
by: Jackie Smit (5 out of 5)
_Hephaistos_ is the stuff of legend: one of those oft-debated demos that signify the birth of something potentially momentous. And whether or not this Swiss quartet realise it, the Kataklysm-meets-Opeth tsunami they have created with the four tracks contained therein has the potential to be regarded in the same league as the likes of The Amenta's _Mictlan_ or even Nile's _Festivals of Atonement_. The reasons for this are very simple and clear-cut from the moment that "Carnal Betrayal" first grabs the listener by the throat. From the outstanding performance and razor-sharp production to the staunch originality of each song, through to the smaller details like the professionalism of the CD inlay, it is clear that Amok are in this for the long-haul. Let's hope that they get their comeuppance sooner rather than later.
