Heartless - _Hell Is Other People_
(Southern Lord, 2011)
by: Dan Lake (7 out of 10)
The pissed-off death-grind community is far from underpopulated, and most bands seeking entry like to blow their hyperactive loads in your face at drag-race speeds and circular-saw volumes. Few are the bands aiming for a dynamic character and front-to-back album flow. Heartless are one of the few. They go for throat early, but they find ways to chew on other parts of your body as well. Opening feedback sounds obvious and unimaginative, until that feedback gets worked into the fabric of actual songs. Just when you start thinking Heartless are gonna grind you out of your mind, tempos jerk backward into a more considered troll stomp. Don't drop your guard though, 'cause they'll be coming for you again soon.

From the grainy, unnerving cover art to the pure goddamn truth of the title to the no-filler grindelicious tightness of the music, _Hell Is Other People_ can turn your 20-minute commute to work into a revolution, or your 40-minute commute to work into two revolutions. (Counterrevolution?)
