Ast Voldur have channelled their adverse life experiences into artistic inspiration, transforming their experiences within Australia's mental health facilities into five tracks of ambient-cum-black metal.
The ambient passages are an integral part of their sound and cannot be considered as mere filler. This does not mean it is inspired; on the contrary, it is rather basic, but does hint at the claustrophobic and oppressive atmospheres so expertly evoked by Atrium Carceri. The metal sections are ostensibly black, but many of the rhythms are clearly taken from death metal and the growls further suggest an allegiance to death metal. A few brief, ominous passages imply that the menacing mood induced by Akercocke at their Luciferian best has been an influence.
Ast Voldur appear to want to create death / black metal with dark ambient undertones that generate a specific atmosphere, one that is the aural expression of inner torment. They reach for it, even manage to hold onto it for a few seconds, but expressing that particular mood remains just beyond their grasp.
