Sea of Nectar - _Paramounts_
(Independent, 2002)

Sea of Nectar are a Venezuelan, now US-based entrant to what could be called "melodic dark metal". For a better idea, imagine Opeth, Agalloch and Katatonia melded into a coherent unit, whilst simultaneously maintaining all of their important characteristics. With a bit more muscle tossed in -- none of the above are renowned for their use of the double bass pedal. The murky MP3 recording quality of my copy precludes me from accurately commenting on the production, but it appears to be above average, although still in need of some polishing to bring out the nuances of the music. It should be apparent by now that they are progressively inclined, with unusual time changes and frequently shifting between hard and soft with concomitant variance in vocal style. The clean vocals are far better than most, but could still do with a bit of coaching, whilst the mid-range growls are far above adequate. This is definitely a rough diamond, and with a bit of tweaking and touching up they could be a musical tour de force.
