Internal Suffering - _Awakening of the Rebel_
(HateWorks, 2006)
by: Quentin Kalis (8 out of 10)
I expected a vicious and inexorable tsunami of brutal death metal / goregrind from this Colombian act. No surprise there. I expected the usual gore rubbish posing as lyrics -- maybe something about using someone's eyes as marbles and their intestines for a skipping rope. I was wrong. Instead, Internal Suffering have a liking for the occult, especially Thelema (the magickal order founded by the Great Beast himself, Aleister Crowley) although I also detect references to Chaos Magick and the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. Despite the mystical lyrics, there is no Akercockian atmosphere, no spooky blackened interludes and no ritualistic numbers, nothing except for straightforward and relentless death metal from the first to the last note. This could have been boring as a result, but the dynamic nature of the songs renders this a moot point.
