Sacrilegio - _La Tradizione Ermetica_
(Independent, 2008)
by: Quentin Kalis (6.5 out of 10)
In its first incarnation circa 2003 Sacrilegio was a three piece, but its resurrected corpse is a one-man project of the aptly named Unhuman Screamer. Perhaps they should have remained a trio; the programmed drums are probably the worst I have ever heard. The hollow tin sound is more sterile than cold and the vibration effect that I imagine is supposed to be a drum roll is so artificial as to be embarrassing. The drums are rather rudimentary, but even so, it would still be preferable if a real drummer was used.

Drumming aside, this project does have its moments of interest, especially the unusual trebly guitar sound which palpably aims at removing any hint of bass and barely sounds distorted. If Ildjarn is the sound of a rusty chainsaw, Sacrilegio is a surgeon's scalpel. The lyrics are entirely in Italian -- not a problem, although the song titles such as "Uccidi il Morto" and "La Tradizione Ermetica" suggest the usual suspects are the lyrical focus. On second thought, the programmed drums aren't that bad; combined with this guitar tone, the entire album is imbued with a veneer of artificiality that actually does work on occasion. The "drum rolls" still have to go. Sacrilegio still needs work, but have just enough intrigue to stand out slightly from the rest of the undifferentiated hordes.
