Hail of Bullets - _...Of Frost and War_
(Metal Blade Records, 2008)

To give Hail of Bullets any shake at a fair and objective review, you need to block out the fact that on first impression they sound distinctly like a Dismember tribute act. It would make sense though, given that the band have themselves got an impressive old-school pedigree, boasting members from Gorefest and Asphyx to name just a few. Their endorsements from fellow musicians are equally impressive; a fact which Metal Blade's PR helpfully point out at every opportunity.

The question, however, is whether they're able to deliver the goods. The likes of "Advancing Once More" and "Inferno at the Carpathian Mountains" certainly put up a strong case for the defence; skilfully crafted vintage death metal distilled through a production job that's just got enough of a modern taint to stop them being an all-out exercise in nostalgia. Whether you're likely to hear anything whatsoever on _...Of Frost and War_ that you haven't heard a hundred times before is another matter entirely, ultimately coming down to whether you feel a band like this is worth shelling out your hard-earned dosh for.
