Sathanas - _Flesh for the Devil_
(Pagan Records, 2007)
by: James Montague (7 out of 10)
Sathanas have been toiling in the Pennsylvanian underground since 1988, and if this year's output is anything to go by, they haven't evolved in the slightest in the intervening decades. This is not necessarily a criticism though, and indeed _Flesh for the Devil_ fits nicely into Pagan Records' recent philosophy of mixing in the occasional dose of old-school comfort with their stream of unconventional, progressive extreme metal.

This is very much no-nonsense death/black metal: no blastbeats, keyboards, chicks or fairies. The riff is undisputed king here, and the bass groove keeps things rolling along in the catchy yet sinister fashion of Slayer's _Hell Awaits_, sadly one of the few times the latter saw fit to make the instrument audible. Vocals come in two styles: a snarling, higher pitched lead and a gruffer, deeper backing voice. Funnily enough, I was listening to Cypress Hill just before Sathanas and couldn't help notice the similarity; both appear to have a little, loquacious chap providing the content and a larger, thicker goon emphasising the key points in less eloquent fashion. Subsitute "hail Satan!" for "yeah, homie!" and you're more or less there.

There's not a hell of a lot to talk about here, as _Flesh for the Devil_ is not in the slightest bit original. But it makes good listening, which surely is the main purpose of music.
