Farflung - A Wound in Eternity
As with many of Meteor City's releases, _A Wound in Eternity_ is not metal so much as classic rock-influenced tuneage of the sort that people who enjoy certain types of metal also tend to dig.
The Haunted - Versus
With the past twelve months seeing half the band devoting much of their time to continent-hopping in order wheel out At the Gates classics in the name of a reunion, you'd be foolish not to at least mildly suspect _Versus_ of being a rush job.
Trees - Lights Bane
"Blackened doom" seems to the buzz genre for 2008, and if you ask me the ones who do it best are bands such as Portland's Trees, who dabble as much in avantgarde and drone as anything.
Thou - Peasant
Thou are on their sophomore album and seem to have their sights set on the top of the blackened doom / earthy sludge heap.
Revolting Cocks - Sex-O Olympic-O
If there were a single succinct way to capture what appeals about a band like Revolting Cocks, it would be this: in a world where a growing majority of art stinks of severe self-obsession, they are the consummate antithesis.
Omnium Gatherum - The Redshift
Most songs have something to offer, and it seems Omnium Gatherum are recapturing the elements that allowed them to create such a magnificent debut album.
Metallica - Death Magnetic
_St. Anger_ strikes me as a fascinating failure; an album that, despite its myriad flaws, had good ideas that ultimately went to waste amidst the turmoil that the band found themselves in at the time. That being said, if _Death Magnetic_ has one thing in common with its predecessor, it's that it has already thoroughly divided public opinion. [by Jackie Smit]
Metallica - Death Magnetic
With _Death Magnetic_, Lars and co. have wisely figured out that they can have their cake and eat it too: if half the potential audience would scarf up anything with the Metallica logo on it, why not placate both sides at once and dish up what the naysayers have been demanding all along?
