Bisclaveret - _Psyche NoMine_
(The Eastern Front, 2007)
by: Quentin Kalis (8.5 out of 10)
The Polish duo of Thorn and Dragos may have named themselves after the Breton word for werewolf, but have shown greater imagination in the packaging and music. The CD arrives in a beautifully adorned oversize rectangular three-panel booklet with postcard. The music is rooted within the field of dark ambient, built around ominous soundscapes and industrial effects. Vocals are present, just a disturbing and manipulated whisper -- but lyrics are included.

The concept is loosely based on the subconscious of a man lost in the world of the occult, oblivious to the mundane events of the physical world. In light of this, it is not surprising that they have quoted from The Great Beast (Aleister Crowley, perhaps the most notorious occultist of all time) in "Akeldama XIV". But the most enjoyable element, at least for yours truly, were the piano flourishes, which serve to enhance the atmosphere, which lies somewhere between brooding and darkly romantic.

For an album that is reportedly two years in the making, the time spent has paid off.
