Grenouer - _+ Try_
(Strictly Heavy Management, 2007)
by: Jeremy Ulrey (7.5 out of 10)
Here we have a mini-CD awash in blushless Meshuggah worship. Which is quite alright with me. There's also a few Fear Factory grace notes slipping through here and there. Expertly recorded and played, _+ Try_ suffers the most in its brevity. At only 21 minutes, this is a mere tasting of what Grenouer has to offer. The decision to release a mini-CD rather than a full-length is all the more puzzling when you consider the amount of time and money that went into this project: the twelve-panel CD booklet is professionally laid out and printed on heavy card stock; the songs themselves benefit from a production job worthy of bands like Meshuggah and FF.

Anyway, the band need not suffer from quizzical marketing practices. The fact is, they bring the goods and then some. Lacking the full blown schizophrenic technicality of Meshuggah, the band nonetheless have done their homework and honed their chops. From the opener, "Devil's Eye", they have the seven-string staggered gallop down to a tee. From there it continues with similar songs all around three minutes in length. If anything, the mini-CD decision may have been made to curb any accusations of one-dimensionality, but honestly this isn't too far abreast of the quality of work Fear Factory and Meshuggah have been putting out the last ten years.
