Machinemade God - _The Infinity Complex_
(Metal Blade, 2006)
by: Jackie Smit (5.5 out of 10)
It should take any semi-seasoned metaller no more than twenty five seconds of the opening track to _The Infinity Complex_ to figure out what the rest of the album is bound to sound like. Everything from the rolling melodic intro, through to the slower verse, the shouty vocals and the crystalline production screams conveyer belt metal, and unsurprisingly this German quintet are already being hailed (by Metal Blade at least) as one of Europe's brightest new hopes. That may be true, given the relative popularity of some of the other garbage that has been branded with similar tags recently, but the fact remains that Machinemade God -- like many others of their ilk -- is really a case of the proverbial emperor's new clothes if ever there was one. On the odd occasion, they manage to peel off a lick or two that could almost be construed as refreshing; but for the most part, there's nothing on _The Infinity Complex_ that hasn't been done a thousand times before. Credit where credit's due: there's obviously a lot of work that's gone into putting this record together, but the same can be said of the last five James Bond movies and they weren't particularly good either.
