Disiplin - _Anti-Life_
(Moonfog Records, 2005)
by: Jackie Smit (8 out of 10)
With a penchant for song titles as juvenile as "Feed the Fucker to the Dogs" and "Swallow Your Own Shit", it's mighty tempting to liken this Norweigian quartet to Deathwitch, who were responsible for 2003's laughably bovine _Violence Blasphemy Sodomy_, and dismiss them altogether. Thankfully though, while Disiplin appear equally as dedicated to old school death and black metal traditions, there are distinct differences between them and the aforementioned musos, making their sophomore effort nigh on impossible to simply ignore. For a start, Disiplin are clearly more comfortable with high-end production values, and so while the likes of "Kill at Will" and "The Arsonist Academy" may be seething with all the venom of vintage Immortal, it doesn't come across as purposefully dated by any means. Likewise, it becomes clear -- particularly as the album progresses -- that Disiplin possess not only a predisposition for all things grim, but they can actually pen an aggressive and catchy tune as well. This doesn't necessarily mean that you'd be doing yourself a mortal injury by not picking up _Anti-Life_, but nevertheless it's good to see that there are still bands coming out of the woodwork that can pull off this style without sounding as though they're taking the proverbial urine.
