Origin - _Echoes of Decimation_
(Relapse Records, 2005)
by: Jackie Smit (8 out of 10)
On the off-chance that someone reading this article has yet to live through the Origin experience, allow me to make one fact abundantly clear: Origin is brutal. Not brutal in the way that Suffocation or (snigger) Mortician is classed as being. Rather Origin is the monster truck to the aforementioned bands' pick-up. They deliver a brand of death metal that is ferocious and then some -- as anyone who picked up a copy of the band's last opus, _Informis Infinitas Inhumanitas_, can certainly attest to.

With nine songs clocking in at just over twenty-five minutes, they also certainly make no bones of their intention to thoroughly obliterate the listener's senses. "Reciprocal" starts things off and is almost scarily heavy; a blur of lightning fast guitars and inhumanly technical drums dancing to the gruff bark of a man possessed in James Lee. But rather than the sometimes inconsequential chaos of _Informis Infinitas Inhumanitas_, _Echoes of Decimation_ is an exercise in acutely focused pummeling -- straight to the point and always engaging.

It's a tweak to a formula that suits the band to a tee, and where most acts kicking up this sort of anti-social racket would succumb to a monotonous drone early on, the Kansas natives pull it off in fine style. In fact, not only do they manage to carry it off without a hitch, but they further top themselves by carrying forward the momentum right through until the final moments of the closing track -- and, as so many Deeds of Flesh and Insision records have proven in the past, that in itself is no small accomplishment.
