Disconsolate - _Crimson Pleasure_
(Independent, 2004)
by: Pedro Azevedo (4 out of 10)
Dutch band Disconsolate play old-school death metal, which may seem odd if you consider their name -- I, for one, expected some form of doom metal to pour out of my speakers when I first spun _Crimson Pleasure_. The reason behind this is simple: they did play doom metal in the past, but now they have dedicated their efforts to something altogether more vicious and aggressive. Laudable as the intention behind this self-released MCD may be however, Disconsolate would have been better off marketing _Crimson Pleasure_ as a demo instead. There isn't much about their old-school death metal in terms of songwriting, technique or production to set them apart from their peers in any way or present them in a very positive light. _Crimson Pleasure_ could have been a simple, unpretentiously pleasant demo, though not a particularly promising one; as an MCD, it is just unremarkable amidst the ocean of similarly minded releases out there.
