Carnal Rapture - _Promo 2004_
by: Jackie Smit (2.5 out of 5)
It's a narrative that's bound to be used a hundred times over to introduce this three-piece, but if one were to imagine The Dillinger Escape Plan without their trademark blasting insanity, you'd probably have a fairly good idea of what to expect from Carnal Rapture. Having originally started off in 1992 under the moniker Internal Bleeding (no relation to the NY death metal outfit), the band are clearly extremely gifted musicians, blending progressive jazz into their metal with an almost effortless panache. From the off, there's a sense of something missing however, and it might simply be down to the disc's very flat recording, but the two songs on offer in this instance -- though skillfully performed -- don't engage nearly as much as they'd like to, and ultimately leave the band coming across as... well, a bit boring, really.
