Molotov Solution - _The Harbinger_
(Metal Blade Records, 2009)
by: Jackie Smit (7.5 out of 10)
I first came across this Las Vegas quintet on the self-titled full-length they released through Twelve Gauge Records last year, and even though they were still fairly rough around the edges then, their penchant for conjuring spectacular beatdowns was evident enough that it didn't surprise me at all when Metal Blade picked them up. Now clearly buoyed by the recognition and what I can only assume would be a half-way decent studio budget, _The Harbinger_ finds Molotov Solution in fighting form. They don't exactly mix it up -- this disc is eleven tracks worth of relentlessly pummelling pit-fodder and not much more -- but they are damn good at what they do. Both "Monolithic Apparatus" and the heavily Suffocation-tinged "Awakening" stick out as highlights; each a cascading onslaught of chugging mischief, anchored by mammoth hooks that ought to carry a health warning. This won't be everyone's cup of tea to be sure, but it's undoubtedly a hack and a slash above most of what passes for metalcore these days.
