Speirling - _The Piper_
(Unholy Design, 2008)
by: Quentin Kalis (5.5 out of 10)
Speirling do not only share a member (Nechtan) with Ethernal, they possess a similar adoration of the past, albeit in a different form, as raw black metal is foregone in favour of thrash and heavy metal mix. Add a touch of droning Celtic Frost riffs and a pinch of Burzum-style minimalism, all within the expected low production mix, and that's about it. In a way it's all been heard before, and Speirling add little to the exhausted ingredients. The sole exception is the instrumental "Into the Blazing Abyss", which combines the basic approach of Burzum ambient instrumentals -- the pre-incarceration ones, with a droning riff smack dab in the middle. It's a classic case of too little, too late, and is insufficient to save this from the being yet another retro trip.
