Cephalectomy - _The Dream Cycle Mythos_
(Discorporate Music, 2008)
by: Quentin Kalis (7.5 out of 10)
This EP consists of one 23 minute track centred in HP Lovecraft's world. Don't get me wrong, Lovecraft is possibly the greatest writer of the supernatural (after Poe, of course) and has influenced many other writers, but isn't his presence in metal getting a bit stale? It's not as overdone as those fucking hobbits and orcs, but it's getting there.

At least Cephalectomy do something a bit new, in that the lyrics consist solely of the short story by the same name. The tricky part isn't setting music to the grunted lyrics, which are indecipherable anyway, but keeping their brand of brutal death and grind with a touch of thrash interesting for twenty odd minutes. Which they do, but alternate with periods of ambient atmospherics, the insertion of which is clumsy and forced, almost as if it were a cut and paste on the PC. Regardless, it is pretty coherent when compared to other one track albums, such as Sabbat's _Dwelling_ or Highgate's _Untitled_, nor is it highly repetitive like the atmosphere generators of funeral doom and dark ambient. Perhaps if they spread this over several tracks, it would seem less strained. Regardless, it remains a valiant attempt that would have pleased the Old Ones.
