Stick to Your Guns - _Comes From the Heart_
(Century Media, 2008)
by: Jackie Smit (5.5 out of 10)
While they never exactly threaten to even tickle the boundaries of creativity, Stick to Your Guns start off their Century Media debut by demonstrating a thorough comprehension of hardcore's fundamentals. "Heart From the Heartless" starts shenanigans off on a high -- punishing, catchy riffing grinding out to an explosive sing-a-long finale that's on a par with the best in the business. Enter track two and things slide rapidly downhill; in an effort to show us just how creative and diverse they are, these Californians resort to sap-drenched Hallmark crooning that would (and should) earn you an ass-whipping in certain more conservative circles. This trend continues to the point where I don't feel like my displeasure is even a case of misdirected elitism. It simply frustrates the piss out of me when a band who are bustling with potential would choose to lower an otherwise respectable effort to the same depths as every other also-ran in an increasingly overcrowded scene. Fingers crossed, they'll learn from their mistakes next time round.
