Power Quest - _Master of Illusion_
(Napalm Records, 2008)
by: Quentin Kalis (7 out of 10)
Power Quest was formed in March 2001 by keyboardist Steve Williams after leaving Dragonforce (then Dragon Heart) with bandmate Steve Scott. Consequently, I expected the strong whiff of a gorgonzola, but was thankfully treated to nothing worse than a mild cheddar. (I suppose cheesiness is an inherent part of its appeal -- I may as well complain about black metal's low production values, sloppy performances and lack of technical prowess.) And they are called Power Quest. Think about it.

They have Dragonforce members, so their musical competency was never in question, and they provide nothing to create any doubt. The songs are melodious, energetic and upbeat, with numerous catchy hooks. The keys are persistent and can get highly irritating. It's impossible to pretend that this is innovative in any sense, but those out for a serving of vibrant and melodic power metal will find a lot to savour here. Best enjoyed with a Cabernet Sauvignon.
