Lycanthia - _Within the Walls_
(Independent, 2007)
by: Quentin Kalis (5.5 out of 10)
The essence of Lycanthia's sound is similar to the "gothic metal" bands littering Napalm Records' roster, especially the variant that prefer to have a naked breast or two on the booklet cover. Although Lycanthia possesses a heavier and simpler sound than is the norm, they fit comfortably in this category and otherwise adopt the usual trappings, such as duelling male and female vocals (guess that provides the growls) and general dark atmosphere. Keyboards are naturally present, although they are only allowed to filter through intermittently, and the inclusion of a violin (or a damn good synth version) is a nice touch. The combination of these factors creates the distinct impression that this is what one of the more mediocre Napalm bands would have sounded like in their demo days: heavier and simpler, more closely allied to doom metal, but with some "goth metal" elements.
