Igor Krutogolov - _White_
(Topheth Prophet, 2007)
by: Quentin Kalis (8 out of 10)
When this arrived in my post-box, I was expecting a dark ambient excursion, and my assumption proved to be partially correct, as this is indeed an ambient CD. But _White_ is not dark by any standard and actually tends towards the uplifting and the beautiful.

The music is underlined by a continuous synth line that continues through all the songs; indeed, a sudden shift in this melody is often the only indication that a new song has started. Additional sounds and effects are provided by samples of rain and flute. The overall effect is an enchanting and engrossing experience that is a welcome break from the darker side of the ambient coin.

The major flaw is that it fails to hold the listener's attention for its entire duration due to its monotony. I can start listening at any point and immediately be drawn into Krutogolov's bewitching world -- but only for short bursts of about fifteen minutes. This is definitely a CD which I am pleased to include in my collection, but it is simply not something that can be listened to in one stretch.
