Distorted - _Memorial_
(NMC / Bad Reputation, 2006)

Distorted are one of an ever-increasing number of female-fronted bands -- I swear they are becoming as numerous as melodeath and metal core. In this case Miri (who has also assisted Orphaned Land as their "ethnic" singer in several live gigs -- their emphasis, not mine) is accompanied by a male growler. Her vocals are the focal point, although the growls are necessary to provide a contrast. Their metallified Sonny and Bono act has been done innumerable times, most notably with Tristania and Theatre of Tragedy, so it remains to be seen whether Distorted bring anything new to this subgenre. The answer is a yes: firstly, they stay away from the Nuclear Blast style darkness that these bands have come to typify in favour of something with a bit of a bite. Their metal has a definite death metal base, although they do not remain within the narrow confines of the genre but introduce a progressive element, with multiple time and rhythm changes sustaining interest. This is not too surprising given that they cite Nevermore and Opeth as influences. All in all, a notable attempt from this Israeli quintet. Available in both an Israeli and world version with different tracklists.
