This Ending - _Inside the Machine_
(Metal Blade, 2007)
by: Jackie Smit (8 out of 10)
It's highly unlikely that This Ending will, as some of Metal Blade's advertising has quite boldly claimed, scare the shit out of your or anyone else's parents. After all, with certifiable lunatics like Blut Aus Nord running amok, it's going to take more than a little melodic death metal to work The Man up into a zealous frenzy. Still, while _Inside the Machine_ rarely shows us anything that many others haven't done several hundred times before, this Swedish quintet score big points in the execution.

Discounting for a moment the band's technical knack -- which these days is pretty much a prerequisite anyway -- This Ending show themselves up as songwriters in the same league as Callenish Circle and Insomnium very early on. Weaving together modern with traditional, songs like "Plague Angel" and "Armageddon" are both savage and infinitely pleasing, and though the odd missed opportunity crops up along the way, it's not hard to see why it took only one demo for Metal Blade to pick these lads up. Certainly, if I were a betting man, I'd put top dollar on hearing much more of them very soon.
