Gurd - _Bang!_
(Dockyard 1, 2006)
by: Jackie Smit (5.5 out of 10)
The sight of a stereotypical metalhead photographed in mid neck-snap doesn't quite instil the greatest sense of confidence that Gurd are going to live up to their supposedly legendary status. Yet surprisingly, _Bang!_ starts off with... well, you get the picture.

Shades of Testament tint the precision onslaught of "The Grand Deception", while the title track recalls Prong at their fiercest and most effective. Sadly, the same level of enthusiasm isn't quite warranted for the rest of the record's twelve tracks. While it wouldn't be fair to call the remaining material an outright disaster, _Bang!_ does grow depressingly ordinary rather quickly, and by the time the band wheel out a cover of Black Sabbath's "Children of the Grave", not even a competent interpretation of a much loved classic can rescue the record from the doldrums of mediocrity.
