Serpent Obscene - _Chaos Reign Supreme_
(Black Lodge Records, 2006)
by: Jackie Smit (7 out of 10)
With a line-up that sports members of Maze of Torment and Kaamos, it doesn't take a huge IQ to figure out what you're in for with _Chaos Reign Supreme_: death metal that is so resolutely old school you can almost hear nail-studded armbands clanging against the guitars as the band tremolo pick their way through the album's ten tracks. Third album or no, all the usual influences continue to apply, with a particular reverence shown to the likes of Angel Corpse, Morbid Angel and Slayer. But with a growing tendency toward such unashamedly retro indulgence as this, what does Serpent Obscene offer that the likes of Cadaver and Deathwitch aren't able to? Well, not much, save for the creative nous to pen a plethora of catchy riffs and deliver them with all the intensity of a herd of charging buffalo. In other words, the approach is the same, but the execution is that little bit better, and while Serpent Obscene may play it painfully safe when it comes to staying within the limited confines of their chosen genre, for all their barefaced sincerity they do at least warrant more than just an offhand acknowledgement.
