Hymn for the Tortured - _Every Night's Another Horror_
(Independent, 2008)
by: Quentin Kalis (6 out of 10)
I can safely say that this is the first band from Guam (a non incorporated US territory) to grace our virtual pages. Actually, it's probably the first band from any of the Pacific Ocean Island states. Out of six tracks, one each is lifted directly from their 2006 EP and 2007 demo, while at least two others have been re-recorded. No doubt this EP is intended primarily as a sampler that consolidates their sound as well as provide a snapshot of their development to date. The older tracks are rougher in sound and less focused, but contain the same essential blend of melodic death and symphonic black metal as the newer material. All the songs are riff driven and highly melodic, with soaring keyboards that do not dominate, but complement the guitars. The obvious influence for their melodic black metal is Cradle of Filth circa _Dusk... and her Embrace_, but without the gothic melodrama and much heavier. It's not going to change your world, but if the riffs lose some of that recycled nature, who knows?
